The Art and Science of Recording a Rock Band: a 3 day workshop
Instructors Matt Boudreau and Michael Winger discuss the techniques and principles of producing and recording a 3 piece rock band.
Featuring the band Pollux and special guest, Grammy nominated producer / engineer, Joe Chiccarelli (The Shins, White Stripes, U2, Tori Amos, Elton John, Beck).

February 15th, 16th and 17th, 2008 at Broken Radio, San Francisco, CA.

Come join us for an intense weekend of learning and fun. Discover new ways to record a band from preproduction to tracking to mixing in this historic San Francisco studio. Whether you are an experienced engineer or just learning how to set up mics, this workshop will be a fun and exciting way to learn more about the art of creating great recordings.

Friday the 15th 6pm-10pm - Food and discussion on preproduction With Joe Chicarelli and the band Pollux. (dinner served)

Saturday the 16th, 10am-7pm- Setup and recording of Pollux with Matt Boudreau and Michael Winger (lunch served)

Sunday the 17th, 10am-7pm - Overdubs and mixing Pollux with Matt Boudreau and Michael Winger (lunch served)

Engineering topics will include                                         

  • choosing and setting up mic's
  • drum mic'ing techniques
  • getting a great bass tone
  • tracking guitars
  • capturing a vocal performance
  • recording and comping vocals
  • overdubbing and editing
  • headphone mixing
  • understanding the patchbay
  • using the recording studio as an instrument

  • getting a great performance

Price is $400 per student and includes meals.
